First Professional Development Event of 2021

Join the LSU HGSA as we invite our very own Dr. Alecia Long and Dr. Meredith Veldman to share their extensive experience in writing and publishing for an educational audience with us. This event will take place on Thursday, February 4 at 6:30pm via Zoom, and will last for about an hour.

In order to make this event as productive and interesting as possible, we are asking all interested attendants to provide questions beforehand. Even if you can’t come, please feel free to submit a question, as we will most likely be able to make the recording available to you all afterward.

You may RSVP and present your questions to the professors at the following link: https://forms.gle/wYHjP4Jg8p4tYLHu7.

Welcome Back Part II: Conference Update

Important update! Given the current circumstances, HGSA has extended the deadline for the 2021 Graduate History Conference. We are now accepting applications up until February, 1st. In addition, please remember that there is no registration fee for LSU students

Presenting at the conference is highly recommended. It can serve as a way of building your CV or receiving helpful feedback on your dissertation/ thesis. If you have any questions or concerns, or if you would like to email your proposal, you may do so at hgsa@lsu.edu.

Welcome Back Part I: Professional Development Meetings

I hope that everyone had a productive and/or relaxing winter break. Now that we're well-rested, we'll be jumping right into business.

Our academic librarian, Brittney O'Neil, has invited us to join faculty from across disciplines in discussing their research in new media and digital scholarship, their personal research methods, and their strategies in working with digital sources and topics. The discussion aims to offer space to exchange information, tips, and tools and connect faculty and graduate students working on similar or related research projects at LSU.

This will take place on January, 28th, via Zoom, from 12-1 pm. If interested, you can register for the event at https://lsu.libcal.com/event/7427747.

In addition, our Professional Development Committee chair, Alex, will be sending a survey shortly to get feedback about general preferences regarding session subjects and times. Please keep an eye out for such.

Finally, I have updated the Workshop Archives section of the blog. This now includes a PDF file listing the primary sources that are available through Gale which may be useful for teaching and research purposes.

Zoom Trivia Night: Part III

This Friday, Tristan will be hosting the third and final virtual Trivia Night over Zoom. The event is open to all HGSA students, even if you have not participated in the previous contests. This will be a great chance to unwind before the end of the semester busyness kicks into high gear.

In addition, we are looking to set up an end-of-the-semester Zoom party. Tristian has sent an email containing a survey so that we can see which date works best for everyone. Please take the time to fill this out so that we can plan accordingly.

Thanksgiving Break and Publishing Workshop Video

I want to wish everyone a happy and healthy Thanksgiving break. We are almost at the end of the semester and I know that we are all pretty busy at this time of the year.

For those who could not make the professional development meeting yesterday, Dr. Skilton was kind enough to let us record the video. Anyone who is interested can watch the video at the following link: Publication and the Publishing Process (11/24/2020)

You can also view this, alongside the slide show our department librarian, Brittany O'Neil, has provided to us in the last development meeting, by clicking on the "Workshop Archives" on the right navigation bar.

Halloween Trivia Night

This Friday (October 30th) we will be hosting our second Zoom Trivia Night, from 6 to around 7 PM. Please coordinate with those in your HGSA team and come prepared to test your (Halloween) knowledge with groups of no more than 4. If you show up solo, no worries, we'll assign you to a team!

The team that places first will receive 5 points for the HGSA semester competition, second place: 3 points, and 3rd place: 1 point.

The Zoom link is available via the email sent to the listserv today or can be retrieved by emailing Tristan directly at trimme1@lsu.edu.

So, grab a drink and start your Halloween weekend off right! See you all (virtually) on Friday!
